you've convinced yourself

that now’s the time

to divide up the blue planet

among god’s chosen few

that bullies and

despots in other

dictatorships

never stop

unless a bigger

thug draws a firm line

threatens to pull the trigger

or fire a missile

you preach how

america needs

her own ukraine

her own taiwan

to make her people

feel better about themselves

without asking them

to do too much

and you won’t stop

until you claim another spot

to compensate

to make the country

seem bigger on the map

right after you've stepped up

and renamed the gulf

we need another

place to ignore

another island

to exploit like

puerto rico

or samoa

a rocky place

to build a

submarine base

as long of course

as the indigenous there

don’t try to emigrate

to florida or georgia

or anywhere else

in your preferred states

but it's really all a show

one way or another

you’ll do the deal

create the chaos

and distraction for

the audience you crave

before you take your cut
