i can only give

you the love

and comfort

your canine age allows

i remember when

you were the fastest

in our motley pack of rescues

now you have hips

that barely work

vision and hearing

mostly gone

i watch your slow

and determined efforts

to go up and down these stairs

how you very much enjoy

your food your sleep

your lots and lots of sleep

how you forget sometimes

and try to leap and play

with younger dogs

hang on a bit more

my little one

the work is almost done

but hardly over

all i know is that

as long as you are here

i have nowhere else

i want to go
